Sony Ericsson releases Q1 2011 report, sells 8.1 million phones

Today Sony Ericsson released its Q1 2011 earnings report, which showed an increasing percentage of the company’s handset sales coming from smartphones on the Android platform. Sony Ericsson claims that Android-based smartphones now make up an impressive 60 percent of its total sales.

Sony Ericsson reported that it sold 8.1 million phones during the quarter, a 23 percent drop year over year, and a 28 percent drop from Q4 of last year. The company claims that this is partly due to a decrease in feature phone sales. The company estimates that it controls roughly 5 percent share of the smartphone market in terms of number of devices sold.

The company also noted that the earthquake in Japan has made the quarter more difficult due to supply disruptions.
