Sony Ericsson releases Q1 2011 report, sells 8.1 million phones

Today Sony Ericsson released its Q1 2011 earnings report, which showed an increasing percentage of the company’s handset sales coming from smartphones on the Android platform. Sony Ericsson claims that Android-based smartphones now make up an impressive 60 percent of its total sales.

Sony Ericsson reported that it sold 8.1 million phones during the quarter, a 23 percent drop year over year, and a 28 percent drop from Q4 of last year. The company claims that this is partly due to a decrease in feature phone sales. The company estimates that it controls roughly 5 percent share of the smartphone market in terms of number of devices sold.

The company also noted that the earthquake in Japan has made the quarter more difficult due to supply disruptions.

BlackBerry users in UAE face restrictions on use

BlackBerry users in the UAE may face restrictions on how they can use their devices, especially if they are tied to a BlackBerry Enterprise Server. Citing security concerns, the government wants to limit usage of the enterprise services to companies with 20 employees or more.

The government has not formally announced anything yet, but the state-controlled telecommunications company, Etisalat, has informed customers that the restrictions to the service would take effect April 30. The message sent to customers via email states that only businesses with 20 or more accounts and a valid UAE trade license would be able to utilize a BlackBerry Enterprise Server. The enterprise services from BlackBerry allow the companies to encrypt their email messages so they cannot be read without proper access.

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, the regulatory body in the UAE, has stated that any confusion with the services would be cleared up this week. The TRU also stated that BlackBerry email, internet, and messaging would continue, but did not specify in what capacity.

The proposed restrictions do not come as a big surprise in this part of the world that has seen various upheavals in recent time. Many of the revolts and demonstrations that have occurred in nearby countries such as Egypt had been organized by users on social media networks who can communicate quickly and easily with the public through internet connected devices such as smartphones.

Samsung Fascinate for Verizon – Galaxy S Android smartphone review

The Samsung Fascinate for Verizon is part of Samsung’s Android-powered Galaxy S family of smartphones. All the versions sold in the U.S. (AT&T’s Captivate, T-Mobile’s Vibrant, Sprint’s Epic 4G) feature 4-inch Super AMOLED displays, 16GB of storage (internal or card based), and a 1GHz Samsung Hummingbird CPU. Only the Sprint model features a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, though.

The Fascinate offers impressive specs overall, and its 5 megapixel 720p HD capable camera ranks high among them, since it even includes the flash that the Captivate and Vibrant lack. It also has none of the lag issues found on the earlier models, which is a relief. The speakerphone function on the phone, however, barely seems to work. Outbound audio on speakerphone calls is no louder than when the speakerphone is off. Regular calls work just fine. Some people might dislike the Microsoft Bing search and mapping features of the phone, but I’m not one of those people. I like them just fine.

Overall it’s an attractive device with great capabilities that runs on a solid network. Its $199 price tag is not necessarily a bargain, but this is my favorite Galaxy S smartphone on the market and is also my favorite non-QWERTY smartphone available on Verizon. That’s saying something.

You’ll find two videos of the Samsung Fascinate after the Table of Contents, below, as well as a sample 720p HD video recorded with it in the gallery at the end of this review.

HTC ThunderBolt review – real 4G has arrived

The HTC ThunderBolt is a landmark device for Verizon Wireless, and it is the first 4G LTE-capable phone available in the United States. In addition to the 4G radio inside, the ThunderBolt has a great 4.3-inch screen, a speedy 1GHz processor, a nice camera, and a very easy-to-use interface.

I really enjoyed using the ThunderBolt as a primary phone. It never failed to please when I needed something quickly, whether that was opening up the camera, or loading a webpage for some information on the go. That being said, it was not without faults (like the battery life), so read on to find out more of our thoughts on the HTC ThunderBolt.
